Yesterday I mentioned three types of contact between generations - parent to child, teacher to pupil, and master to
apprentice. Perhaps the third is different, from the other two. Apprenticeship comes after rearing and schooling - it is something new, perhaps even something one has chosen for oneself. It is less generic, more focused in practice, an alternative to what has gone before. I would like to have been apprenticed to someone who really knew what the world was about.
I am feeling bad as I have given up piano. Part of the reason is I do not practice enough. To me to be apprenticed to someone requires a commitment of time beyond just being with them, a space for practicing and a genuine giving over of time to the thing one is learning whether it is learning to drive, fly a kite or play the piano.
ReplyDeleteI walk most days with my friend Annie in the cemetery with our dogs, she is a community psychiatric nurse. She says there will be no money to help people soon so she is studying "Acceptance" helping people to realise there is no pill, no talking cure - this is - as good as it gets. I said what about Lacan - what about the short cure - what about the present holding all possible futures - she said that that doesn't stop many people hanging themselves from trees or jumping from tall building - just to feel weightless again.
